Learn about diamond quality: The 4 C’s
A grading system developed by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is used to describe the quality of a finished diamond. There are four important criteria to describe and classify diamonds: Carat Weight, Color, Clarity and Cut. These are known as the 4Cs.
CARAT
Diamond weights are stated in metric carats, abbreviated “ct.” One metric carat is two-tenths (0.2) of a gram.
For brilliant cut diamonds (round shape), there is a link between the carat and the diameter of each stone.
COLOR
The GIA D-to-Z scale is the industry standard for color-grading diamonds. Each letter represents a range of color based on a diamond's tone and saturation. In jewellery, the graded diamonds selected are from D (colorless) to H (near colorless), or sometimes to I.
The diamonds selected by Virginie David are from the color F or G.
CLARITY
Clarity is a measure of the number, size and position of the tiny imperfections that occur in almost all diamonds.
There are 11 clarity grades in the GIA clarity grading system. They are Flawless, Internally Flawless, two categories of Very, Very Slightly Included, two categories of Slightly Included, and three categories of Included.
Many of these imperfections are microscopic, and do not affect a diamond's beauty in any discernible way.
The clarity is evaluated under 10x magnification.
CUT
The cut is the shape of a stone.
PRECIOUS METALS:
In recent years, the titles are no longer announced in carats but in thousandths
. Thus, 18 carat gold represents gold 750 ‰ which consists of 750 ‰ pure gold .
White gold is an alloy of pure gold (75%) and several white metals like palladium and pure silver. The white gold is covered by a layer of rhodium to shine. Virginie David creates jewellery in white gold with palladium. It does not yellow over time and retains its luster.
Yellow gold is made of 75 % pure gold and 25 % silver and copper.
Pink gold is made the same way . However the copper share is more important than the one for the yellow gold jewellery.
Platinum, white - grEy color, is pure at 95% (Platinum 950/1000) .
